Colt Starting and Troubleshooting
Since she was a child, Vicki has been passionate about horses and obsessed with being out in nature with them. Her grandparents homesteaded a cattle ranch in Arizona that is now part of the Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge. Her early life was filled with showing western horses, trail riding, and horse camping with her dad. She became a competitive hunter/jumper equestrian when she was 10, riding with Mary Gatti at Rainbow Canyon Ranch in Azusa, CA. In 1988 she quit riding to pursue a BA in Psychology at the University of California, Santa Cruz.
After missing the horses and the positive influence they had on her life, Vicki began her professional career by founding Ridgemark Farm LLC in 1992. Vicki's students won numerous state and national hunter, jumper and equitation awards over the past 30 years. Vicki prides herself on her commitment to continuing education within the horse industry, regularly seeking out clinics and getting counsel from prominent jumping equestrians such as Olympic Gold Medalist Melanie Smith-Taylor, Olympic Course Designer Linda Allen, and multi-time Equitation Finals winner Jim Hagman.
For the past 15 years, Vicki has become devoted to the horsemanship of Tom Dorrance, Ray Hunt, and Buck Brannaman. She is a regular participant in his clinics, and she loves to start colts and work with troubled horses using these methods. In 2013 she began to study with Sport Psychologist Dr. Carrie Wicks and is a graduate of her W(I)NNER'S CIRCLE program. She also completed the educational programs of EAGALA, Equine Alchemy, and Creative Awakenings Intl. which were all pivotal turning points in her horsemanship journey.
In Vicki's lessons, she aims to teach us about our horses AND about ourselves. Whether you're taking a riding lesson, learning groundwork, or participating in one of her non-riding Horse(wo)manship Experiences, you'll learn to practice mindfulness and how to speak the language of the horse.
